In the Shadows of the City

A family moves from the countryside to Beirut to escape the civil war between Christians and Muslims „only to be caught in an equally dangerous situation. The film revisits the 15 years of the civil war in Lebanon that ended in 1990 through the eyes of Rami, following him from age twelve throiugh adulthood as his family struggles with unemployment, death, and the disappearance of loved ones. As Jean Khalil Chamoun funnels this history through his young protagonist, he invests the shadows of the past with "noble dreams and precious memories."

Zeineb, 30 years old and divorced, thinks that divorce will bring her freedom. MÍhamed, an archaeologist, imagines that emigration holds his future. His chance meeting with Zeineb, his first love, brings back his old dreams. They meet Ali, just returned from America, full of plans and schemes. The three take off in an American convertible, heading toward southern Tunisia across sweeping landscapes open to hopes and dreams. In Metlaoui they encounter Mouldi and Zohra, who take refuge there in their love, their strong principles, in beer, the passion of Verlaine and memories of Salah Guermadi.
Im Metlaoui truths are revealed and disillusions emerge, but hope can be reborn as well.

Not Going There, Don't Belong Here

An expository and reflexive piece on the Palestinian refugees in Lebanon. Combined with the filmmaker's narrative about her return to Lebanon, the film unravels the lives of a neglected people who have felt mistreated and forgotten for over fifty years, and who nonetheless have a persistent desire to return to a homeland still forbidden.

500 DUNAM ON THE M00N is a documentary about Ayn Hawd, a Palestinian village captured and depopulated by Israeli forces in the 1948 war and subsequently transformed into a Jewish artist's colony and renamed Ein Hod. It tells the story of the village's original inhabitants who, after expulsion, settled in the outlying hills. A critical look at the art of dispossession and the creativity of the dispossessed.
